Microsoft unveils "Surface" tablet

Microsoft unveils "Surface" tablet in Los Angeles on Monday.
Microsoft Corporation has unveiled its own tablet computer, in a bid to take on Apple's dominance in the fast-growing market.

Microsoft introduced the "Surface" tablet in Los Angeles on Monday. The software giant's new product will come loaded with the Windows 8 operating system and a keyboard on the inside of the cover.

The company is trying to reduce its dependence on operating software for revenue, as demand shifts from traditional computers to mobile devices.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer says the company will soon launch a new family of computer-related products.
