Burma president postpones visit to Bangladesh
Myanmar President Thein Sein's scheduled visit to
Bangladesh has been postponed in the wake of state of emergency after
recent sectarian violence in Rakhine State in western Myanmar that has
reportedly claimed dozens of lives.
The announcement comes in a press briefing here in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Sunday evening after foreign secretary-level meeting between the two neighboring countries which also discussed entire gamut of bilateral relations.
Myanmar president was scheduled to come to Dhaka on July 15 on a three day visit.
According to the meeting decision, a new date will be announced soon, the Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes told reporters in the press briefing.
He said, "we have been informed that his visit to Bangladesh is postponed due to violence in Rakhine State."
In the face of the deadly clashes between Muslims and Buddhists, Myanmar in the second week of the last month declared a state of emergency in Rakhine to deal with the violence.
