Thirty suspects have been arrested by the Myanmar
authorities in connection with the killing of 10 Bengali-Muslims in
western Rakhine state, which stirred up a deadly riot in the state,
according to state media Monday.Citing the result of the probe into the
case by a sixteen-member
investigation team, headed by Deputy Home Minister Brigadier- General
Kyaw Zan Myint, the New Light of Myanmar said action is being taken
against the 30 suspects in accordance with law.Ten Muslims were killed
aboard a passenger bus in Taunggup by a mob on June 3.The report added
that 19 out of 24 suspects have also been arrested
by local police in connection with the raid on the Sittway Police
Station on June 3.
Before the killing of 10 Bengali-Muslims, an ethnic Rakhine woman, Ma Thida Htway, 27, was raped and killed by three other Bengali-Muslims in Kyauknimaw village in Yanbye township on May 28.
The three were arrested on May 29 but one of them committed suicide on June 9 when they were being detained in Kyaukpyu jail.
The remaining two were sentenced to death by the Kyaukpyu district court on June 18.
According to the official figure, death toll of the recent riot in the Rakhine state rose to 78 as of June 24, while 3,158 residential houses were destroyed in arson and 97 attacks on each other occurred.
More than 52,000 people fled the riot-hit townships.
Over the past two weeks, some displaced people returned to their villages in the state after the government claimed restoration of peace and stability in the area.The state of emergency in the state along with imposition of curfew in six townships including Maungtaw and Sittway have been in force since June 10.
