Netanyahu’s ask Morsi to honour peace treaty

Netanyahu’s ask Morsi to honour peace treaty

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sent a letter to Egypt’s new Islamist president asking him to honor a peace treaty between the two countries.
Israeli officials say the letter was sent last week to Mohamed Morsi through the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. Netanyahu congratulated Morsi on winning the presidential run-off, and asked him to maintain the peace treaty the two countries signed in 1979 for the sake of stability and security in the region.
Netanyahu also said he sent his special envoy to meet top Egyptian military officers.
Netanyahu’s move is designed to ensure the survival of the peace treaty, which has been the basis of Israeli security policy for more than 30 years. The overture comes amid anti-Israeli sentiment within the Muslim Brotherhood that backed Morsi in the presidential election.
Morsi has said he will respect international treaties, while pledging to restore the rights of the Palestinian people.
