ASEAN was launched on August 8th,1967, as a regional cooperative bloc consisting of Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.ASEAN 10 member states since the addition of Cambodia in 1999, with a total population of more than 580 million.
The ceremony was attended by envoys from ASEAN member countries, as well as Japan, the United States and the European Union. It featured a raising of the ASEAN flag and balloons released into the sky by the ambassador of current chair country Cambodia and others.
ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan described the day as special not only because it's a time to look back on the bloc's 45-year history, but also to reaffirm its future goals.ASEAN aims to create an economic community for the bloc by 2015. But at a foreign ministers' meeting in Cambodia last month there arose confrontation concerning territorial disputes over islands in the South China Sea. NHK's correspondent in Jakarta says ASEAN now faces the question of whether member countries can take harmonized steps to solve the problem.
