100th Indian Science Congress to be steered by Hon’ble Prime Minister as its General President

· To be held in Kolkata, the city to host 1st edition of ISC

· To focus on “Science for Shaping the Future of India”

· To witness participation from Nobel laureates & eminent scientists across the world

New Delhi, October 09, 2012: The centenary session of the Indian Science Congress (ISC), the largest national science event with thousands of delegates participating, exploring, understanding, analyzing and interacting on matters of science, was announced by Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology today. The highly prestigious Indian Science Congress (ISC) is scheduled to be organized from 03 – 07 January 2013 in Kolkata, West Bengal. This was announced at an august gathering of scientists from all over India to discuss the forthcoming event.

The event is likely to be attended by around 10,000 participants including Nobel laureates and several eminent scientists from India and abroad, besides lakhs of students and general public.

The focal theme of the centenary session of Indian Science Congress would be “Science for shaping the future of India”. Emphasis will be on how science should emerge as a building block for the future of India. The manner in which the new Science, Technology and Innovation policy 2013 could be implemented would form the central theme of the annual session. A road map for investing science into the development process of India is the main topic for discussion. Various economic sectors like agriculture, housing, energy, environment, health care, water, home land security, communication etc may require new scientific knowledge for shaping their future. The centenary session is expected to serve as a platform for creating coalition among all stake holders of science and society to pave a new path of progress for the country in the emerging global knowledge economy.. Special emphasis will be laid on bridging the divide in our society using Science and Technology to achieve inclusive development – be it economic, geographical or gender based biases.

Announcing this significant event, Dr. T. Ramasami, Secy, Department of Science & Technology said, “It has been well realized that Science, Technology and Innovation are the three pillars from which future societies could not only benefit but also rely for solving social challenges. Thus the focal theme of the centennial session of ISC has been chosen as “Science for Shaping the Future of India”. The magnificence and glory of this celebrated edition of ISC would be fully reflected in the activities associated with the summit.”

The centenary session of ISC will showcase cutting-edge technologies, leading scientific products and services, path breaking R&D initiatives and achievements of India’s foremost and leading public and private sector organizations, government departments, research labs, educational institutions and defense services.”

The five day event will comprise Technical Sessions, Plenary Sessions, Vision Talks, Panel Discussions, Vigyan Sancharak Sammelan, Public Lectures, Pride of India Expo, Children Science Congress, Women Science Congress, Genesis- Symposium, Cultural Programme, Valedictory Function and Vigyan Jyot.
PoI Expo is spread over an area of 10,000 sqm with dedicated pavilions like Union Ministries, R&D, States of India, PSUs, Corporate/Industry, Countries/International, Edu Vision, Defence, SMEs/BFSI/Tourism etc. and special pavilion - Hall of Pride. Hall of Pride” (HoP), a dedicated section designed to raise a toast to the life and works of a prominent scientist and a philanthropist; Theme pavilion “Edu Vision” brings various educational institutions under one roof & other stake holders in education sector.

Concurrent to the centenary session of ISC, Genesis, a one day symposium will also be organized. The theme will be “India's R&D Vision, Innovation and the Opportunities for Industry growth”. Genesis has emerged as an important forum where best of minds from Industry, Scientific Fraternity, Policy Makers and Academia come together on a common platform and delve on the issues related to science and technology of national importance. On the occasion of 100th ISC Genesis Symposium will go one step further and would be Research Industry Collaboration Hub – RICH with the help of web base partnering tool – Interlinx.
Another attraction of Science Congress will be Vigyan Jyot (Flame of Knowledge), will travel from Delhi to Kolkata by road spreading importance of science amongst youth en-route encouraging them to take pure science as career and remains lit at the PoI Expo site throughout the event.
