Luigi Pio Tessitori - An Italian Life Devoted To
India
An outstanding Italian
indologist and linguist, Luigi Pio Tessitori was among the first
European scholars to
understand the literary significance of medieval Indian languages
and to investigate the
evolution of neo-Indian languages. A full-fledged humanist and
a dedicated researcher
of all aspects of Indian art and archaeology, he was among the
first to suggest a
prehistoric nature of the Indus Valley Civilization. His
photographic
plates of Indian life
are a loving and significant contribution to the modern Italian
perception of the Indian
cultural heritage. He inspired the foundation of the Società
Indologica in Udine,
which greatly contributed in recent years together with the
University of Udine to
the mutual understanding of Italy and India.
