Turkey attacks on Syria for a second day

Turkey's military has carried out artillery attacks on Syria for a second straight day in retaliation for a deadly Syrian shelling of a Turkish border town.Turkish media said on Thursday morning that the sound of shelling by Turkey was heard on the Syrian border.

The attacks began on Wednesday after a Syrian mortar bomb hit the Turkish border town of Akcakale, killing 5 civilians.Syria said it is investigating the source of the bomb and called for restraint.

Turkey's parliament began discussing a bill to authorize the country's military to respond to a threat against national security by crossing the border.

Turkey has demanded that Syria establish a buffer zone on the border to shelter Syrians fleeing the country.

Observers say Turkey may take the opportunity to allow its troops to enter Syria to secure such a zone.

Syria has accused Turkey of helping opposition forces in Syria smuggle weapons and terrorists into the country across the border.
