Presidential election begins in Egypt
Voters in Egypt will cast their ballots in a presidential election over two days starting Monday. Opinion polls suggest former defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is expected to win. Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi are the two candidates.
Egyptian voters elected Mohamed Morsi as president after decades-long authoritarian rule collapsed three years ago in a movement known as the Arab Spring.
Morsi had the backing of the Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood. But he was ousted in a de-facto coup last July that was led by Sisi.
Recent opinion polls suggest Egyptians want stability and a rebuilding of the nation's economy under strong leadership.
But some Egyptian pro-democracy activists, as well as observers outside the country are concerned that a win by Sisi may herald the return of authoritarian rule.
