The coverage of the Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana in Sikkim stands at 98.50 percent. The banks, in this small mountainous state with a meagre population of little over six lakhs, have been successful not only in opening new accounts but also in mobilizing handsome balance in the accounts so opened.

There was a time when the people in this remote, peaceful and tranquil State were not much inclined to open bank accounts and instead, liked to go for cash transactions only. However, with the passage of time and with spread of awareness they gradually started to open bank accounts. Now, one lakh twenty thousand three hundred fifty four households, out of a total of one lakh twenty two thousand tw0 hundred thirty eight households in Sikkim, going for opening of bank accounts is a testimony to the tremendous response the Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana has received in the State.

The Nodal Officer for the Scheme the with Regional Office of the State Bank of India, the Lead Bank for the State, Mr.Mahesh Subba gave a brief account of the progress achieved under the Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana in Sikkim.

Achieving a progress figure of 98.5 percent under the Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana in a mountainous Sikkim was not an easy task for the banks .The most challenging task for them was to make the hitherto un-banked households understand the benefits they were going to get under the scheme. However, publicity through newspapers and radio played an important role in taking the scheme to the masses.
